Arixtra and Pregnancy

Labor and Delivery With Arixtra

Given that there is so little experience with the use of Arixtra during pregnancy, there is also little experience with the use of Arixtra during labor and delivery. Therefore, there are no standard recommendations for how to deal with pregnant women on Arixtra during labor and delivery. Different healthcare providers will likely have different approaches to using Arixtra near the end of pregnancy, particularly because there may be a risk of serious complications if epidural or spinal anesthesia is used in a person receiving Arixtra.

With other long-acting injectable anticoagulants, some healthcare providers prefer to plan an early induction of labor while keeping a woman on Arixtra until a certain period of time before the induction. This would probably be an option for Arixtra as well.

Final Thoughts

In many cases, the benefits of Arixtra during pregnancy clearly outweigh the possible risks. However, there are also cases where it is unclear if Arixtra will truly be helpful. In any case, women should discuss the possible risks and benefits for their own particular situation with their healthcare provider.
