Arixtra Side Effects

Serious Side Effects

Some Arixtra side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. Most of the serious side effects of Arixtra are related to bleeding, an inherent risk with "blood-thinning" medications. Some of the warning signs of these serious side effects include:

  • Unusual headaches, dizziness, or weakness
  • Unusual bruising (bruises that develop without known cause or grow in size)
  • Blood in the urine
  • Blood in the stool (usually seen as red or black stools)
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bleeding from cuts that takes a long time to stop
  • Menstrual bleeding or vaginal bleeding that is heavier than normal
  • Coughing up blood.

In rare cases, Arixtra can cause dangerously low blood platelets (thrombocytopenia) in a manner similar to heparin medications. This reaction is known as "heparin-induced thrombocytopenia" (HIT) when it occurs due to heparin, and some people call the Arixtra version of this problem "fondaparinux-induced thrombocytopenia." It can be life-threatening and may cause extensive and serious blood clots.

If a person develops this problem due to Arixtra, he or she should not take the medicine ever again. It is important to note that Arixtra is not a heparin medication, and many people who have HIT can successfully take Arixtra.

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the Arixtra side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.

Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any adverse reactions while taking the drug or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be a side effect of Arixtra, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
