Off-Label Uses of Arixtra

Arixtra® (fondaparinux sodium) is a prescription medicine approved for treating and preventing blood clots in adults. However, on occasion, a healthcare provider may recommend this blood thinner for other, unapproved uses. When medications are taken for an unapproved use, it is known as an "off-label use."

Some possible off-label uses of Arixtra include:

  • Preventing death or future heart attacks after certain "cardiac events" (such as heart attacks)
  • Long-term management of clotting disorders in people who cannot take warfarin
  • Managing clotting disorders in pregnant women or preventing recurring pregnancy loss, particularly in women who cannot take heparin medications.

Arixtra may be approved in other countries for these uses, but in the United States they are unapproved, "off-label" uses.
