Ferriprox and Breastfeeding
No research has been done to determine if Ferriprox (deferiprone) passes through breast milk in humans or animals. Due to the unknown risks, the manufacturer recommends women not take Ferriprox while breastfeeding. If you do use this medicine while nursing, watch for any side effects in your child.
Can Breastfeeding Women Take Ferriprox?
At this time, it is unknown if Ferriprox® (deferiprone) passes through breast milk in humans. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, talk with your healthcare provider before taking Ferriprox. No studies have been done to determine whether Ferriprox passes through breast milk in humans or animals. In addition, it is not known what problems, if any, this drug could cause in a nursing infant.At least theoretically, any of the usual Ferriprox side effects would be possible. If your healthcare provider recommends taking Ferriprox while breastfeeding, make sure to let your child's healthcare provider know so that your child may be monitored for any potential side effects.
