Ferriprox Drug Interactions

Iron
Iron binds to Ferriprox, preventing it from being absorbed from the digestive tract and making it less effective. More importantly, the whole point of taking Ferriprox is to decrease the amount of iron in the body; therefore, people who need to use this medicine should be making efforts to avoid iron.

Milk Thistle
Milk thistle may increase the level of Ferriprox in the blood, increasing the risk for side effects. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

Zinc
Zinc binds to Ferriprox, preventing it from being absorbed from the digestive tract and making it less effective. Do not take Ferriprox and zinc within four hours of each other. Be aware that many cold products, such as Zicam®, contain zinc.
