Fragmin Side Effects

Bruising at the injection site, blood in the urine, and increased liver enzymes are some of the most common side effects of Fragmin. In most cases, side effects are minor and easily treated. However, it is possible to develop problems that may require immediate medical attention. Some of the potentially serious reactions include coughing up blood, blood in the stool, or unusual bruising.

An Introduction to Fragmin Side Effects

As with any medicine, Fragmin® (dalteparin sodium) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Fragmin. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects With Fragmin

Fragmin has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Fragmin were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking other similar medications (like heparin) or a placebo (an injection with no active ingredient). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the groups taking the heparin or placebo.
In these studies, common side effects of Fragmin included:
  • Bruising at the injection site -- "most common side effect" (exact percentage unclear)
  • Increased liver enzymes (found using routine blood tests) -- in up to 14 percent of people
  • Pain at the injection site -- up to 12 percent
  • "Major" bleeding (dangerous bleeding) -- up to 5.6 percent
  • Blood in the urine -- up to 2.9 percent
  • Bruising at the surgical wound site -- up to 3.4 percent.
Note that some of these side effects are both common and serious.
