Fragmin Uses

Fragmin is a prescription blood thinner approved for adults. The specific uses of Fragmin include the treatment or prevention of blood clots in people who have cancer or who are undergoing certain surgeries. It works by slowing down clot formation, allowing the body to naturally break down blood clots. One possible off-label use includes treating clots in people without cancer.

What Is Fragmin Used For?

Fragmin® (dalteparin sodium) is an injectable anticoagulant medication, commonly known as a "blood thinner." It is approved for the following uses:

  • To prevent blood clots in people undergoing certain types of surgeries or who are immobile due to severe illness
  • To treat blood clots in people with cancer
  • To prevent certain complications after heart attacks (or other similar heart-related events).

Fragmin for Blood Clot Prevention
Fragmin is approved to prevent blood clots deep in the veins of the body, known medically as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT clots typically occur in the legs or hips. These clots can be especially dangerous if the clot dislodges and travels to the lungs, where it may cause a pulmonary embolism (PE).

Specifically, Fragmin is approved to prevent DVT blood clots in people who are:

  • Undergoing abdominal (stomach) surgery who are at a high risk for blood clots
  • Undergoing hip replacement surgery
  • Acutely ill and are at risk for clots due to immobility, such as people in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Fragmin for Blood Clot Treatment
Fragmin is also approved for long-term treatment of blood clots in people with cancer. Having cancer increases a person's risk for developing blood clots. Fragmin can be used for an extended period of time to treat blood clots (including DVT clots or PE clots), and to help prevent the clots from recurring.

Notably, Fragmin is not approved for treating blood clots in other situations (although it certainly is used "off-label" for these purposes).
