Innohep Side Effects

Although most people do not experience any side effects with Innohep, negative reactions are always a possibility. In clinical studies, the most commonly reported side effect was bleeding. Other common reactions included chest pain and increased liver enzymes. If you notice unusual headaches, dizziness, or bruising while using this anticoagulant, tell your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Innohep Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Innohep® (tinzaparin sodium). However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Innohep. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects With Innohep

Innohep has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people using Innohep were documented and compared to side effects that occurred in a similar group of people using another similar medication (heparin). This way, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group using heparin.
In these studies, common Innohep side effects included:
  • General bleeding -- reported as the "most common side effect" (the exact percentage is unclear)
  • Bruising at the injection site -- in up to 16 percent of people
  • Increased liver enzymes (found using routine blood tests) -- up to 13 percent
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI), such as a bladder infection -- up to 3.7 percent
  • Chest pain -- up to 2.3 percent.
Other common reactions (occurring in 1 to 2 percent of people) included:
  • Nosebleed
  • Low blood platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Back pain
  • Fever
  • Pain
  • Constipation
  • Rash
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomiting
  • Blood in the urine.
Note that some of the common side effects are also quite serious and medical attention should be sought if they occur.
