Standard Rivaroxaban Dosage for Treating Blood Clots
The standard rivaroxaban dose for treating blood clots (either deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism) is rivaroxaban 15 mg twice a day, with food. After 21 days, you can be switched to a lower dosage of rivaroxaban 20 mg once daily, with food. Your healthcare provider will decide how long you should be treated, as continued treatment helps to prevent future blood clots.
General Information on Taking RivaroxabanSome considerations to keep in mind during treatment with rivaroxaban include the following:
- If you forget to take your dose, take it as soon as you remember, as long as you remember on the same day, even if this means taking two doses at once (which may happen for people who take rivaroxaban twice daily). Continue with your regular schedule on the next day. If you fail to realize you missed your dose until the next day, just skip the missed dose and continue as usual.
- If you have difficulty swallowing medications, the 15- and 20-mg Xarelto tablets may be crushed and mixed with applesauce. The crushed tablets may also be mixed with water when given through a feeding tube. Do this right before you take your dose. You will still need to eat after this dose, even though the crushed tablet is taken with applesauce.
- For this drug to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. You may be increasing your risk for serious problems if you stop taking it too soon.
- If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or rivaroxaban dosing in general, please talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
