Thalassemia is an inherited condition that affects a person's ability to produce hemoglobin in red blood cells. The genes that code for hemoglobin are either missing or different from normal genes. Alpha thalassemia occurs when there is a problem with the alpha-globin chain. Beta thalassemia occurs when there is a problem with the beta-globin chain. Treatment options depend on the type and severity of the disease.
