Trental Drug Interactions

More Detail on Trental Drug Interactions

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative reactions that can occur when Trental is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Blood Pressure Medications
Trental may slightly decrease blood pressure. Your healthcare provider should monitor your blood pressure regularly while you are taking Trental with high blood pressure medications. If you are taking any medication to lower your blood pressure, your healthcare provider may need to reduce the dose. Do not reduce the dose without first consulting with your healthcare provider.

Certain Herbal Medications
Components in gingko, ginger, garlic, and horse chestnut may have antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects, which could increase the risk of bleeding. Make sure to watch for any signs of bleeding, such as easy bruising, when taking Trental with any supplements containing these substances.

Cimetidine
Cimetidine may increase the levels of Trental in the blood. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

Ciprofloxacin
Ciprofloxacin may increase the levels of Trental in the blood. Close monitoring for the side effects of Trental is recommended if you start taking ciprofloxacin and Trental together.

Diabetes Medications
Trental may increase the hypoglycemic effects (blood sugar-lowering effects) of diabetes medications. Check with your healthcare provider before taking Trental with a diabetes medication. You may need to monitor your blood sugar levels more closely for a while.

Blood Thinners and Other Similar Medications
At least theoretically, Trental may increase the risk of bleeding, including dangerous internal bleeding, when combined with other medications that "thin" the blood (or that increase the risk for bleeding in other ways). This includes many prescription drugs and even a few nonprescription ones. Check with your healthcare provider before combining Trental with any other medication that may increase the risk for bleeding.
