Trental Side Effects

It is possible that Trental side effects may occur, but they are generally mild and do not usually require medical attention. Some of the most common reactions reported include nausea and vomiting. If you experience these side effects, your healthcare provider may try lowering your dosage. Seek immediate medical attention if you have chest pain, seizures, or difficulty breathing while taking this medication.

An Introduction to Trental Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Trental® (pentoxifylline) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Trental. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Trental

Trental has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received the real medication, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In these studies, the most common side effects of Trental included but were not limited to:

  • Nausea -- up to 2.2 percent of people
  • Vomiting -- up to 1.2 percent.

Side effects involving the digestive and central nervous systems appear to be the most common when taking Trental. Nausea and vomiting appear to be reduced when this medication is taken with food.

If you experience nausea or vomiting, you should talk to your healthcare provider about lowering your dose. If the side effects continue after the dose is reduced, discuss with your healthcare provider whether the drug should be discontinued. Do not stop taking this drug or reduce the dosage without first consulting your healthcare provider.
